Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 is a legendary and famous gudeg restaurant in Yogyakarta, which was first founded by Bu Tjitro Sastrodiprodjo in 1925. She passed on the preservation of this traditional cuisine to her descendants. Currently, Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 has been preserved and developed by the 4th generation.
In the beginning, Mrs. Tjitro opened her gudeg business in Ngasem Market, Yogyakarta, in 1925. In serving her gudeg, Mrs. Tjitro maintained the traditional recipe, which included the use of palm sugar. The recipe was passed down to her descendants. In 1970, one of her sons, Mr. Sumadi Suprodiprojo (2nd generation), established a gudeg restaurant in Pasar Senen, Jakarta.
This traditional culinary business was then continued by her granddaughter, Mrs. Retno Widiastuti, together with Mr. Soetiman Soetiono (3rd generation), by establishing a gudeg restaurant on Jalan Adisucipto KM 6, Yogyakarta (in front of the Ambarukmo Hotel) under the name Aneka Bujana Bu Tjitro on August 28, 1990.
After her business grew, on April 29, 2000, she moved locations and built a restaurant at Jalan Janti No. 330, Yogyakarta, and changed the name to Bu Tjitro 1925 Janti Restaurant, which it remains to this day. Since 2008, Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 has been managed and developed by the late owner's two daughters, Bu Jatu Dwi Kumalasari and Bu Rika Kumala Dewi (4th generation).
This long journey spanning four generations is inseparable from Bu Tjitro's family's love for preserving and developing traditional cuisine. In 2016, Gudeg Bu Tjitro 1925 received an award from the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in the Cultural Award and Traditional Art Maestro Award in the Preservation Category for its dedication and devotion to preserving the culinary arts (Gudeg cuisine) of Yogyakarta.
